  • Captain … Violet!

The replica Star Trek chair from my previous entry… finished and in my parents’ living room… occupied by my 90-year-old mother-in-law, Violet. She couldn’t stop laughing!

  • That is so funny!!!! Thanks for the comment good to see some of us are still around. I certainly don’t get on like I used to but keep trying.

  • OK.  This reader needs an explanation!!!!!  Hilarious.

  • @daisiesanddragons - Yep, I read more than I write these days, but Xanga is so fun that I’ll never give it up! If you need encouragement, let me say — think of something to write today!

@csn71650 - My bro and pa enjoy woodworking projects, and my brother is a Star Trek fan who likes to make replica artifacts from famous shows. Right now, he’s working on a replica Tardis from Dr. Who. They just recently finished this full-scale Captain Kirk bridge chair from the original series of Star Trek. It has every bell and whistle, and in every respect is as similar to the original chair as human hands can make it. It even contains a computer that will make all the appropriate sound effects when you press the buttons, including recordings from the original series of various characters speaking over the intercom. There are even “discs” for the Star-Trek bridge computer slot on the chair, if you may remember that. They used a combination of stills from the show, clandestine close-up photos of the original wherever it is now, plans published online, and notes about what materials the original set designers used and how they went about it.

We all took turns sitting in it once it was done, commanding the living room with a stern gaze, &c. Now the chair resides at my brother’s condo, but it was fun to get a chance to sit in that chair!

  • More than impressive!

  • @CuriousGeorgina - I am soooo impressed.  this is wonderful.

  • Not far from where I live is the small town of Riverside, Iowa – the purported birthplace of Capt. Kirk. The trekkies who gather there each year would get such a kick out of that chair. You should consider sending the photo to their website. I’m sure they have one out there somewhere.

Good luck with your career change. That sounds exciting. I’ve always enjoyed writing about destinations.
