  • CG the TA

Wow, things sure are heating up quickly around here!

The English department at my university doesn't have enough grad
students to help professors as teaching assistants, so I was
recommended to fill in the gap. I'll be leading two first-year seminars
and marking their essays, and by the end of the year I'll have a TA
certificate too, which may help me later if I decide to go into
    teaching at some level.

This is great, because the grad program I'm thinking of at U of T
doesn't offer much teaching experience. So I get to find out if I'd
like to teach at the university level -- right here, right now!

I just hope this won't compromise my coursework. I need very high grades this year. But I just couldn't pass up the opportunity!

Xanga-wise, I'm in the sad position right now of being able to read
your kind comments without having much time to visit your sites and
keep up with you all. I'm so sorry about that. You'll see me sometimes,
though -- just not every day!

    *looks about nervously, rushes off*

  • Oh, I hope it all works out! What a wonderful opportunity!

    Good luck!

  • i know -- never enough time in the day... best wishes!

  • Wow, I'm jealous. You can't get a TA position at Brock unless you're a grad student. First year English seminars - wow, that would be ... torture. I'm not sure I could handle an hour per week discussing form, meter and symbolism. I won't follow that up with any other thoughts regarding English at university (ie I would never say 2nd, 3rd and 4th are kinda painful too) until I confirmed whether you're undergrad is being done in English (eek) or History (yay).
Thank goodness our liberal studies program includes a 4th year practicum course that involves TAing the first years for a month and then writing a summary paper, or else I wouldn't be able to do more than take the TA courses that Brock offers.
Congratulations on receiving the position though; at U of T, getting recommended for anything speaks incredibly highly of you as a schollar. (and no, this is in no way influenced by the likelihood that you'll be a year ahead of me in Medieval studies there 2 years from now :=P ... although I should probably start to consider bribes and excessive flattery now).

  • Cool on the position! Look forward ot hearing about it when you have time on your hands. No pressure xanga. You just be well and take care of business!

  • Congratulations! Just think about how this will help you get your foot in the door, and to give you a little taste of what it might be like...way to go!

  • Bizzy Bee you are going 2b, eh?  Bet you'll be great at it!

  • Wow- a teacher! Nice! I’m kind of in the same situation as far as not being able to comment or visit much.

  • so cool! My daughter's been TAing since her junior year because the dept for her major also doesn't have enough grad students. She enjoys it, although she says she really wouldn't have the patience to teach students as lazy as the ones in her review sections.

  • Wonderful on getting the experience! We understand how busy you are, don't worry about Xanga. ryc: I thought wringer washers were fun! :heartbeat:
