An Odd Coincidence
Today, I thought I'd tell a story that gave me goosebumps when one of my oldest friends, Chris, shared it with me.
I met Chris when we were both very young. Now he lives a thousand miles
away, but for about 20 years we were close and did many things
together, including running a business as partners for over a decade.
He is a great friend – intelligent, thoughtful, warm-hearted and
generous, dry sense of humour, killer smile – unforgettable.
A few years ago, Chris was sharing a rented house with a few friends,
while I lived with my partner of the time a couple of blocks away. His
grandfather, a southern-Ontario teacher, had died, and he received a
box of his old papers. I think he enjoyed going through them and
learning more about this interesting man.He discovered that his grandfather had hoped to publish some of his
writing, particularly some poetry. After he retired, back in the 1960s,
he had investigated this possibility, but he was unsure how to go about
it. Naively, he responded to a magazine ad from a "literary agent" in
Toronto who, for a price, would seek publication for his clients. Chris
found a bundle of correspondence between his grandfather and this
agent. Despite many letters over a period of years, Chris’s grandfather
was eventually frustrated to realize that the unscrupulous agent was
taking money without providing any useful services. It seems that he
was never able to get his money back, either.Leafing through these decades-old letters, Chris was naturally angry
about this agent who took advantage of his grandfather's longing to be
a published author. He took a closer look at the man's contact
information, and noticed the address from which the agent did his
business. At that moment, Chris was sitting in the very house the agent had been writing from, over 30 years before.
Did you shiver? I did, all over again!
Later edit: Some
of you asked about the poetry, whether it could be published now. As I
recall, Chris said that it was very old-fashioned verse, the kind of
thing you might expect to read in a volume from the 50s or 60s entitled
"Boy's Own Annual" or something like that. So it could certainly be
published privately for the family, but there might not be a public
market for it.

All I can say is OMG!!!!
WOW, that is strange!!! He should try to get the peoms copywritten and see if he can get them published for his grandfather, even though he is gone. What a great gift to everyone that would be!
Truth is stranger than fiction!
Gave me the shivers, too!
Hope all is well and you are having a nice day!
that is wierd!!! I got chills too!.........what would be the odds?
Did he find his grandpa's poems? or are they all gone?
How creepy is that! Sad that there are people in this world who prey on trusting souls like his grandfather. I agree with Tealya...It would be great if he could get them published.
(Loved the pics on your last post...especially the bee!) It has been so hot here that the gardens are all burning up. Thanks for the oasis!
That's creepy all right.
Freakycoolweird! Thanks for sharing that story!!!
Just wandering through xangaland and found a link to your site. (through 30 to 40-Something blog) So I stopped in to say hello. Yes I did shiver, that was strange. Thanks for sharing the story.
Hope you have a truly wonderful day!!!
*goosebumps*
more goosebumps here
There isn't a large market for poetry in general, but there is a market. And it doesn't matter if it's "old timey." It will reach an audience. No, the question is, does Chris want to part with something so personal. The worst that would happen is going to the self-publishing. However...there are plenty of magazines and smaller venues that would take it on. Won't know until you try.
Periodicals is the way to go with publishing poetry.
And.. you've been tagged, come get your assignment.
*sings* "It's a small world after all..."
Oh, yeah! I got shivers! How strange is that? Wow!
RYC - there is an addendum confirming my plans. I appreciate you caring enough to remind me
. Best wishes.
I love reading about those cool coincidences. The man in the pic, Chris? is quite a major hottie too. You can tell him I said that. LOL
yeah, that was kinda strange wasnt it?? thanks for dropping by... i am doing the best i know how for my best friend sheilah,, she loved her mom so,, it is hard,, abrazos y besos
Yeah, I shivered that is too coincidental. But what a treasure to find and cherish. Even if they never are published for anyone but family they will be appreciated.
Definitely shiver-y. but RYC: Finkbinder is actually the name of my English-teacher-to-be, though I think your idea is a lot more entertaining. And APUSH = AP US History. (If only it was really an /interesting/ code!)
RYC: back in the day...(man, I hate when people say that!) people that were diagnosed with strange cancers weren't so much concerned about the cause, but instead, the cure...I was diagnosed with cervical cancer back in 1987. I was 28 years old, living in California...the cost to get my cancer under control bankrupt me, and I had to move back to Niagara Falls to my parents' house.
What I am amazed about now is that the cause of my cancer is now widely advertised in PSA's on television. They urge women to get their yearly pap smears, because it can detect the human papiloma (sp?) virus...a virus that can evolve into cervical cancer. Back in 1987 it was called vaginal warts...ewww...no wonder I felt so isolated and depressed...who would want to share that they had warts...down there?! I'm happy to report that I have been cancer free since 1990.
Finding an on-line support group when I was diagnosed with MS was my lifeline, and so important to my sanity when first experiencing the scary symptoms of this disease. Thank you for reaching out, sharing, and providing inspiration to all who read your blog!
Ew..Your friend's story is creepy! Karma for the agent maybe?
weird! sorta like how i ended up living around the corner from the great grandmother who had died of breast cancer in 1895...I had no idea they had lived there!!!
Oh that gave me goosebumps!
"Goosebumps" but really intriguing.
A strange coincidence indeed!
very spooky indeed.
wild story...
*gasp*
...i really did gasp irl!
Very strange coincidence. Incourage Chris to publish his grandfather's verse for the family. With computers he can do it himself saving the cost of a vanity press. The family members can bind the pages in the way they want. My great grandfather was a owner/publisher/typesetter of a small newspaper and a state legislator. He left a huge box of many copies of his verse printed and bound. The family would not give us any after he died, but I have the one copy he gave to my father. It's quait, but I'm glad I have it. Anyway, a few years ago I saw an ad for a house in a real estate flyer. I fell in love with this house and I lusted for it. So my husband took me to look at it. It turned out to be the very house his first wife bought after their divorse 40 years ago!
